We the People? is a multi-generational workshop that unpacks the U.S. Constitution in regards to questions of citizenship, migration, and how the law could be radically reimagined. The workshop will be led by CUNY Law Associate Professor Julia Hernandez as part of YoU artists Alex Strada & Tali Keren’s participatory installation, Proposal for a 28th Amendment? Is it Possible to Amend an Unequal System? The first part of the workshop will center on the exclusionary history of the Constitution. Participants will then be invited to creatively intervene within the document through audio recording, writing, and performance prompts. 

The event will be held bilingually in both English and Spanish and is open to people of all ages.

Julia Hernandez is an Associate Professor of Law at the CUNY School of Law. Julia’s law practice has focused on representing parents, children, and families in child welfare and immigration proceedings. She also researches and writes about pedagogy and political lawyering. Prior to joining CUNY’s faculty, Julia was an attorney with Brooklyn Defender Services’ Family Defense Practice where she represented parents in child neglect and abuse proceedings. Julia also worked with non-citizens fighting deportation with Catholic Migration Services.

¿Nosotrxs la gente? es un taller multigeneracional que analiza la Constitución de los Estados Unidos en relación con cuestiones de ciudadanía, migración y cómo la ley podría ser radicalmente reimaginada.

El taller será dirigido por la profesora asociada de Derecho de la CUNY Julia Hernández como parte de la instalación participativa de Alex Strada y Tali Keren, ¿Propuesta para una 28ª enmienda? ¿Es posible enmendar un sistema desigual? La primera parte del taller se centrará en la historia excluyente de la Constitución de los Estados Unidos. Luego de esto, invitaremos a los participantes a intervenir de forma creativa en un documento a través de la grabación de un audio, documento escrito y así como actuando. 

Este taller se será llevado de forma bilingüe en inglés y en español y está abierto a personas de todas las edades.

Julia Hernández es profesora asociada de Derecho en la Facultad de Derecho de la CUNY. La práctica jurídica de Julia se ha centrado en la representación de padres, niños y familias en procedimientos de bienestar infantil e inmigración. También investiga y escribe sobre pedagogía y abogacía política. Antes de unirse a la facultad de CUNY, Julia fue abogada de la Práctica de Defensa de la Familia de los Servicios de Defensa de Brooklyn, donde representó a padres en procedimientos de negligencia y abuso infantil. Julia también trabajó con no ciudadanos que luchan contra la deportación con los Servicios Católicos de Migración.
